There were several sightings of the Owlman between 1976 and 1978, all in the vicinity of Mawnan Church, after which it seems to have disappeared. There have been one or two reports since then but not many. It was Cryptozoologist Tony "Doc" Shiels who reportedly coined the name Owlman".

The sightings happened at a time when many weird things were going on in the area.
During the spring of 1976, the weather in Cornwall went through extreme shifts between heat waves and cold snaps. Animals behaved strangely - there are reports of packs of dogs, cats and birds terrorizing people. In addition there was an upsurge in UFO reports. Add to all of this the fact that Mawnan Church is reportedly situated on a ley line and the whole thing becomes worthy of investigation. Something strange was happening in the area at the time.

The Owlman is not Mothman says Neida. This was a time when England was having so much trouble with Ireland. The human terrors, the bombings and shootings and gang violence could certainly express itself also in the animals behaviour)

Two 14-year old girls, Sally Chapman and Barbara Perry, were camping out for the night not far from the church of Mawnan when they heard a hissing sound; then they saw, 20 yards away, a strange figure standing among the pine trees.
"It was like a big owl with pointed ears, as big as a man. Its eyes were red & glowing." Both girls thought it was someone dressed up trying to scare them, and laughed at it. Then it flew up in the air, and they could see that its feet were like black pincers. Its feathers were gray.  Humcat 1976-22  Source: Doc Shiels, Fortean Times # 17   OWLMAN

A young girl, Jane Greenwood, and her sister saw, in the trees near Mawnan Church, a bird man "standing like a full grown man, but the legs bent backwards like a bird's." It saw us and jumped up and rose straight up through the trees. It has red, slanting eyes and very large mouth. The feathers are silvery gray and so are his body and legs; the feet are like big black crab claws."  Humcat 1976-23  Source: Doc Shiels, Fortean Times # 17
OWLMAN  is a protector of sorts, not of people but at least in this case of this unique energy spot that the church is upon. Protects it from what? That's a good question. This very ancient race has Earth origins and has changed very little evolution wise over time.

A sixteen-year-old girl saw a large humanoid resembling a leathery owl with claws flying through the trees near the church. It reportedly had large round red eyes and a gaping mouth.   HC addition # 704  Source: Graham J McEwan, Mystery Animals of Britain and Ireland
